Models and Observations

The coupled ocean-sea ice model NAOSIM, developed at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, was used to simulate the distribution of I-129 across the Arctic Ocean (external pagecollaboration with M. Karcher, OASys) and compared to measured I-129 concentrations. The model allows to investigate changes in the tracer distribution over larger timescales, where observational data is not available. It will also be used to estimate the transient I-129 signal exiting the Arctic Ocean through Fram Strait, thereby providing an input function of I-129 to the subpolar North Atlantic.
